Off-duty soldiers arrested after hotel fire
Two off duty soldiers have been arrested following a suspected arson incident in a Belfast city centre hotel in the early hours of this morning.
Emergency services were called to the Travelodge on Brunswick Street at 3am this morning to deal with a fire in the first floor kitchen. The fire was dealt with and the building suffered minor damage to the kitchen and a section of the seventh floor. The hotel's owners expected the hotel to be reopened this afternoon.
A spokesperson for the fire brigade said that, as two seat cushions had apparently been placed over an electric grill in an area where the fire took hold, arson was suspected.
By mid-morning, police investigating the incident arrested the two soldiers. The pair are not believed to have been involved in fire fighting duties during the recent FBU strikes.

ASSEMBLY CREATE AWARD TO HONOUR FIRE SERVICE
THE Northern Ireland Fire Service is to receive the first ever award given by the province's devolved assembly. An illuminated scroll is to be presented to Chief Fire Officer John McClelland on Tuesday, by assembly speaker Lord Alderdice in tribute to the sacrifice made by fire fighters over the years.

Fire injures five in Ballymurphy house blaze
A suspected arson attack on a house in west Belfast has injured five people. Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at the house in Whitecliff Parade in the Ballymurphy area at around 1.30am. Four women were treated for the effects of smoke inhalation while a fifth person suffered leg injuries after jumping from a first floor window.

NI's Chief Fire Officer Announces His Retirement
The Chief Fire Officer for Northern Ireland, Peter Craig, has announced that he is to retire after over 35 years of distinguished Service. Peter Craig is one of the longest serving officers in Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service and was appointed as Chief Fire Officer in February 2011, having been the acting Chief from July 2010.

UK-Born Limerick Fireman Compensated
An English-born firefighter has been awarded €5,000 in compensation for discrimination by Limerick City Council. An Equality Tribunal heard Martin Mannering, now living in Cappamore, Co Limerick was left a note to leave his job because he was no longer "in Middlesbrough".
