Three jailed after stabbing

Three County Down men have been jailed for stabbing a student with a broken bottle.

Grant Dugan, 21, underwent two emergency brain operations after he was assaulted and stabbed with a broken bottle in an alleyway in the town centre on Christmas Eve 2005.

Two of the attackers were former pupils of Campbell College Grammar School in Belfast.

Aaron Vance, 21, Robin McCullough and Ryan Robinson, both 19, had been involved in the attack which left Mr Dugan fighting for his life.

Vance, of Beverley Heights in Newtownards was given a five and a half year jail term with an additional 12 months post-custodial supervision order after pleading guilty to grievous bodily harm.

McCullough, from Belfast Road in Bangor and Robinson from, Cairndore Vale in Newtownards were each ordered to serve three years and nine months in Hydebank Young Offenders’ Centre.

Speaking outside Belfast Crown Court, Mr Dugan said: “I’m just happy the three of them have been sent away.

“What happened to me has destroy my family life for the past year and a half because nothing has been the same since it happened – but I’m happy with the sentences that the judge gave them.”

A fourth accused, Christopher Reid, 19 from Killinchy Road in Comber was ordered to serve 12 months detention in Hydebank, suspended for 18 months, for admitting to provide information to the police about the assault.
