Ten injured as museum staircase collapses
At least ten people have been injured after a staircase collapsed at the Natural History Museum in Dublin.
The staircase crumbled in the Merrion Square building at around 11:30am.
Ten people are currently being treated at St James’ and St Vincent’s hospitals for what has been described as “crush injuries”, but emergency staff say their injuries are not life-threatening.
Five units of the fire brigade and up to 10 ambulances arrived at the scene and traffic restrictions were placed on route to Dublin hospitals.
Arts and Tourism Minister Seamus Brennan, who visited the scene shortly after the accident, said: “Our first thoughts are with the injured. I hope that the injuries are not too serious.
“Obviously the museum will be immediately closed to the public and I will ask the director to carry out a full safety audit of the building.
“I understand it happened in an area of the museum not normally used by the public, for a training course, I understand, for teachers.”
