Man remanded over pensioner murder
A County Antrim man has appeared in court today charged with the murder of a Belfast pensioner nearly 20 years ago.
The body of Lily Smith, 66, was found at her home at Moveen House in Finaghy on the outskirts of Belfast, in 1988. She had been strangled.
William James Stevenson, 43, of Coast Road, Ballygally was arrested yesterday at a house in County Antrim village. He has denied killing the devout Christian, who had been viciously beaten at her flat, which was also ransacked.
A detective inspector told Belfast Magistrates Court he believed he could connect Mr Stevenson to the charge.
Defence solicitor Michael Madden cross-examined the inspector who confirmed Mr Stevenson had been interviewed in 1988 in relation to the killing and denied having any involvement in the murder.
Mr Madden told the court: “The defendant completely denied the allegations at the time.
“He has never tried to escape to another jurisdiction, he maintains his account and he hotly denies this charge.”
Mr Stevenson has been remanded in custody until 8 August.
