'Spy case' bail application adjourned

Sinn Fein's head of administration, Denis Donaldson, arrested along with three others alleged to be part of a 'spy ring' at Stomont, has had a fresh bail application adjourned at Belfast's High Court.

Lord Justice Nicholson had originally refused 52-year-old Mr Donaldson bail last month following a two-day hearing after his arrest in October charged with possessing documents which could be useful to terrorists.

His renewed application for bail was lodged on Monday with lawyers arguing that there had been a change of circumstances. However, Lord Justice Sheil, who considered the application overnight, said the case must go back to Lord Justice Nicholson.

Mr Donaldson is facing five charges of possessing documents which could be useful to terrorists after it was alleged that he had documents containing details about the Army's most senior officer in Northern Ireland, a sketch of Castle Buildings at Stormont and details about known loyalists and a serving police officer.

He is one of four people arrested in connection with a police investigation into alleged IRA spying at Stormont which led to the collapse of the local power-sharing assembly.
