Drugs seized off west Cork coast
An air-sea search for a missing man off the coast of Cork has netted what is believed to be the largest drugs haul ever in Ireland.
Gardai have seized cocaine worth an estimated 100 million euro following reports of a man missing from a dinghy off the west Cork coast.
One man has been arrested on drugs trafficking charges. He is helping police with their inquiries. A second man is in hospital in Bantry.
Irish detectives are searching for two men in a van who are thought to be accomplices waiting for the drugs shipment.
Some 50 packages that later proved to contain cocaine were seen floating in the sea. Gardai assisted by naval and customs officers retrieved over one tonne of drugs bales from the sea in the area.
An inflatable boat has also been recovered at the scene. It is thought that a larger boat may have been used to transport the consignment of drugs into Irish waters.
The search of the area is expected to last several days.
