Search underway after dinghy capsizes

A sea search and rescue is underway in off the Irish coast for a man who disappeared after a dinghy capsized.

Three men, all from England, went out in the dinghy on Sunday evening from Dun Lough between Mizen Head and Three Castles Head, in west Cork.

Garda are reported to be investigating the discovery of a number of packages. Tests are being conducted on the contents after they were handed over to Gardai.

One of the men managed to swim ashore at around 8am this morning, and raised the alarm, while the other was rescued a short time later. He was taken to safety by a helicopter crew, about a mile off shore. The two men who were rescued are being treated for hypothermia at bantry General Hospital.

The third man is believed to still be missing in rough seas off Golleen.

A Coast Guard spokeswoman said the men were both “extremely shocked.”

“There is an intensive search underway for the third guy.”

It is understood all three men are in their 20s, and their boat capsized after getting caught in large swells.

The Valentia coastguard is in charge of the search and they called in the Castletown lifeboat, the Shannon-based helicopter and a rescue team from Goleen.

The condition of the seas is described as “moderate to rough, with a westerly force four wind.”
