Soldier remanded after fire at city centre hotel
A 23-year-old soldier has been remanded in custody following an attempted arson attack on a city centre hotel complex in the early hours of Monday morning.
Appearing at Belfast Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning, Daniel John Casely, a serving member of the Coldstream Guards, was charged with criminal damage and arson with intent to endanger life.
The court heard that emergency services were called to the Travelodge on Brunswick Street yesterday morning at around 3am to deal with a fire in the first floor kitchen of the complex, which caused £15,000 worth of damage to the building. Twenty-five guests also had to be evacuated during the incident.
Mr Casely was remanded in custody until 17 December 2002.
A second man arrested in connection with the incident has been released on police bail, to appear before police on 30 December 2002.

A woman has become the 16th person to be arrested following a number of police raids in Londonderry on Wednesday. Ten men and five women were detained on both sides of the River Foyle following a planned operation by detectives investigating serious organised crime in the area yesterday.
