Belfast airports on 'critical' alert
Belfast’s two main airports have issued advice to passengers last night as Northern Ireland went on 'critical' terror alert along with the rest of the UK.
Northern Ireland Secretary of State Shaun Woodward said security was stepped up to the Government’s highest state of alert in response to the attacks in London and Glasgow.
Passengers travelling with Flybe from George Best Belfast City Airport have been advised to check in early, while those travelling to Glasgow have been asked to contact Easyjet about arrival and departure times.
Mr Woodward said that with the IRA’s bombing campaign now in the past, the same groups suspected of the strikes over the weekend now posed a major danger.
He added: “Today when we talk about this – and it’s a bizarre thing to talk about in context of being normal – terrorism by and large in Northern Ireland is actually the problem which we all face throughout the UK.
“It is the threat from al Qaeda and related terrorist groups who want to disrupt our British way of life. We are not going to let that happen.”
Security has been heightened in both Belfast Airports as a precaution. At Belfast International Airport two extra police vehicles were drafted in and patrolling by airport police has been intensified.
