Firefighters tackle blaze at former Londonderry Shirt factory

A former shirt factory in Londonderry has been extensively damaged in an overnight fire.

Firefighters spent the night trying to contain the blaze at the derelict Tillie and Henderson building in the cityside end of the Craigavon Bridge at Carlisle Square.

The alarm was raised shortly after 7pm on Tuesday evening when flames were seen in the top floor and roof of the building which was originally built in the mid-1800's.

The Foyle Road, Abercorn Road and the top-deck of the Craigavon Bridge were closed as the fire service tried to stop the blaze spreading to nearby homes.

Arsonists have targeted the premises on a number of occasions recently.
