NI Court Service launch online claims service
The Northern Ireland Court Service has launched an online small claims service today.
‘Small Claims Online’ is an innovative IT service which allows members of the public and businesses to access the Small Claims Court over the internet is a first for the courts here.
The Minister for the Northern Ireland Court Service, the Rt Hon David Hanson MP launched the service.
He said: “Being able to make applications online for the first time in Northern Ireland is an important step forward in giving people greater access to the justice system whenever they wish from the comfort of their homes.
“This new service is quick, simple to administer and available outside of normal working hours – and most importantly, eliminates the need to attend court to make an application.”
Every year, an excess of 10,000 small claims are lodged at court offices. These can be claims up to a value of £2,000 for money owed for things such as unpaid debt, rent arrears, hire purchase payments, damage to property and unsatisfactory workmanship.
The new service has recently been awarded the 2007 GoldenEye award for best innovative use of IT in the public sector in Northern Ireland.

Two court service officials face probe over trip
Two senior court officials have been suspended pending an probe into a holiday in Copenhagen with the head of a private security firm. In a statement the Northern Ireland Court Service confirmed that police had been called in to investigate the matter and that an independent investigation would examine the circumstances surrounding the trip.

Justice Minister Increases Upper Limit Of Small Claims Court
Justice Minister Naomi Long has announced an increase in the maximum value of claims that can heard in the Small Claims Court, up from £3,000 to £5,000. The increase was brought forward following consideration of responses to a public consultation on increasing the general civil jurisdiction of the county court.

Small Claims Court Upper Limit To Be Increased
The upper limit for claims which can be heard in the small claims court is to be increased, Justice Minister Naomi Long has announced. From 3 October 2022, the maximum value of a claims which can be heard in the small claims court will increase from the current level of £3,000 to £5,000.

Court Service Consults On 'Cash Limit'
Northern Ireland's Court Service is launching a consultation into a proposal to raise the limit for bringing cases to the County Court from £15,000 to a new £50,000 ceiling. Other options are an increase to £25,000 or an unlimited jurisdiction.

Queen opens new court complex during Belfast visit
During a visit to Northern Ireland today the Queen, accompanied by Prince Philip, performed an opening ceremony at Laganside court complex. Amid tight security, including specially trained police marksmen on rooftops, a small crowd applauded as the party arrived at the £30 million glass-fronted building in the city centre this morning.
