Police investigate murder of doorman
Police are investigating the murder of a man who was shot while sleeping in his bed in County Londonderry.
Brian McGlynn, 28, was in bed in his home in the Fountain Hill area of the Waterside when two men entered at about 3:30am on Sunday.
He was shot several times. His 24-year-old girlfriend who was also in the room was uninjured.
Mr McGlynn, originally from Strabane, had been working as a doorman at the Red Rooms nightclub as well as another pub in the city.
Detectives are currently trying to establish a motive for the killing. Detective Chief Inspector Jeff Smyth said the gunmen made their getaway across the Craigavon Bridge in a green Vauxhall Cavalier car.
“This is day one of a murder investigation,” he said. “I can’t rule out anything. I can’t say it is paramilitary-orchestrated and I can’t say that it is crime-orientated."
He appealed for anyone who knew why Brian McGlynn had been singled out and murdered to come forward.
Sinn Fein Derry City Councillor Lynn Fleming said there was no place in society for such behaviour.
“What we don’t want after 35 years of conflict is a gun culture, we want to get away from those days.”
She concluded: “I express my condolences to the young man’s family. I am shocked at this turn of events and I totally condemn the murder of this young man no matter the motivation of those involved.”
Three people have been arrested this morning in relation to the incident and are currently helping police with their enquiries. They are all from the Derry area.
