Arrest made after gun and ammunition find

A 20-year-old man has been arrested and a handgun recovered in Bangor, Co Down, this morning.

The weapon and ammunition were found at Silverstream Avenue in the town at about 3am.

Local roads in the area were closed during the search operation of a house and nearby waste ground but have since been reopened.

PSNI Acting Assistant Chief Constable Maggie Hunter said that she was "delighted" the handgun had been taken off the streets.

She added that she was convinced that the incident was linked to recent tensions within loyalism.
