Judge calls for publican ASBOs
Anti-social behaviour orders (ASBOs) should be served on publicans who allow young people to get drunk, according to a judge.
Lord Justice Girvan made the announcement during a High Court bail hearing of an 18-year-old male who is accused of attempted murder.
Jonathan Armstrong from Coily Hill, Killyleagh was released on bail following an alleged attack on a 17-year-old boy in east Belfast’s Sydenham area earlier this month.
Judge Girvan said he must help police to identify where he had been drinking.
“I expect to hear within four weeks what steps have been taken in regard to obvious breaches of the licensing laws that allow young people to get into this state of drunkenness,” he said.
“The licensing laws are not being properly enforced and thought should be given to ASBOs on licence holders who breach the law.”
The alleged victim had been on a life support machine for five days and is still in a serious condition.

Man refused bail over musician's murder
The man accused of murdering blues musician Jim Gilchrist was refused bail today at the High Court. Daryll John Quigley, 18, from Woodland Walk, Limavady, was charged with murder along with two others, after Mr Gilchrist's body was recovered from the river Foyle in September last year. One of the two other men accused was also refused bail.

County Armagh couple jailed for child abuse
A couple from County Armagh who were found guilty of subjecting their children to 10 years of abuse have been sentenced to a total of six and a half years in prison. The 37-year-old man, was sentenced to four and a half while his partner, aged 41 was jailed for two years.

Judge grants bail to Ihab Shoukri
The High Court has today granted bail to Belfast loyalist Ihab Shoukri. However the judge, Mr Justice Weatherup, refused to consider documents claiming that he was a leading member of a loyalist paramilitary organisation and ordered him to live in England due to a number of death threats issued against him.

Judge revokes shot loyalist's bail
A leading loyalist, who was shot six times last month, has been ordered to return to prison after he is released from hospital. The judge at Belfast's Crown Court, today revoked Mark Haddock's bail, saying that when he was shot, he had made a "deliberate, significant and, flagrant breach of his bail conditions.

Judge denies application to revoke Shoukri bail
A police application to have Ihab Shoukri's bail revoked has been rejected at Belfast Crown Court. Judge Tom Burgess said that there was no evidence before him which suggested that the 32-year-old had broken bail conditions. Mr Shoukri was arrested when police raided a Belfast bar on the York Road last week.
