Announcement of post office closures expected

Up to 200 post offices in Northern Ireland may be forced to shut following the government’s decision to press ahead with a mass closure.

It is thought that 2,500 small post offices in total could close across the United Kingdom in the shake up.

Wendy Cairns, of the Northern Ireland Federation of Subpostmasters, believes Stormont could be the key to saving the local post offices after the cuts are announced.

“Our MLAs, by giving us admin work such as dog licensing or just general form checking, could prove vital,” she said.

Royal Mail has today insisted they have not even started to consider which post offices in the province will close, or even how many.

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said: “We can’t start developing proposals in response to today’s anticipated decision until the announcement is actually made.

“Furthermore, we won’t, by the end of today, have a figure or the names of the post offices set to close in Northern Ireland - these could take some time.”

It is understood Trade and Industry Secretary Alistair Darling will later confirm the plans to close the post offices across the UK.
