Minister announces support for retailers
Criminal Justice Minister Maria Eagle has announced that retailers will be given government support to strength their security systems against raiders who could damage their businesses.
Speaking at the launch of a new retail crime prevention initiative today the Minister said that reducing crime and the fear of crime remains a key priority for the Government.
She also paid tribute to her predecessor, David Hanson, and vowed to build upon and continue the programme to reform.
“There have been many changes in recent years which have made Northern Ireland’s justice system ready for the challenges of the 21st Century. This programme of modernisation and reform will continue,” Maria Eagle said.
Under the ‘Don’t Discount Crime’ initiative, postcards offer crime prevention advice on a number of areas prevention advice, protection of stock and cash, and physical security of premises.
Ms Eagle said: “Measures such as this can give practical advice to stop owners and their staff to make sure they are not victims of crime. Retail crime affects everyone. It can often have a devastating impact on the viability of a business and the personal security of staff and customers.”
She concluded: “Through this initiative the Government is providing support to shop owners and their staff to help them prevent crime, improve physical security of their premises and protect stock and cash.”
