Irish teen wins abortion battle
An Irish teenager has won a High Court battle in Dublin and has been granted permission to travel to Britain for an abortion.
The judge ruled there is no statutory or constitutional impediment to her leaving the country for that purpose.
The 17-year-old, known only as 'Miss D', is 18 weeks pregnant with a baby that has anencephaly, a condition where a major part of the babies brain, scalp and skull is missing. Babies with this condition have a life span of approximately three days.
Miss D wanted to travel to the UK for a termination, but she had been denied the right to leave the country by Ireland's Health Service Executive, which had the girl in its care.
The teenager has been under the guardianship of the HSE since March.
