Shots fired at INLA funeral

A man has been arrested after shots were fired at a paramilitary group leader's funeral in Londonderry.

Former leader of the Official IRA and founding member of the INLA, John White died at the weekend, aged 60.

A lone gunman emerged from public toilets at the City Cemetery with a handgun at about 11:30am, fired about eight times then ran off.

Police have arrested a man on suspicion of possession of a firearm and discharging a firearm in a public place.

A follow-up operation is currently underway in the area.

Masked men led the INLA funeral from his home to requiem Mass at St Joseph’s Chapel in the Galliagh area.

Woman Arrested Over Peggy O'Hara Funeral
A 51-year-old woman has been arrested in relation to offences at the wake and funeral of Peggy O'Hara in July. The woman was arrested in L'Derry and has been detained at Musgrave Police Station. Peggy O'Hara was the mother of an INLA member who died in a hunger strike in Long Kesh in 1981.

Peggy O'Hara Funeral: Two Released
Two people arrested in connection with the funeral of Peggy O'Hara have been released unconditionally. A 53-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman were arrested in L'Derry after a number of masked men and women attended the funeral. Peggy O'Hara was the mother of an INLA member who died in a hunger strike in Long Kesh in 1981.

Wright Murder Report Says 'No Collusion'
Almost 13 years after the controversial killing, findings from the public inquiry into the murder of LVF leader Billy Wright inside the Maze prison have been released this afternoon. The report into the murder of former leading loyalist Billy Wright has said there was no collusion between the authorities and the INLA gunmen.

New Child Funeral Fund Comes Into Operation
A new Child Funeral Fund, offering a one-off lump sum payment of £3,056 to help families with the cost of a funeral on the death of a child under 18 or in the event of a stillbirth after 24 weeks, has now come into operation, Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey has announced.
