easyJet announces three new Belfast/Gatwick flights
Low-cost airline easyJet has announced it is to introduce a new service route between Belfast International Airport (BIA) and London Gatwick.
The three times daily service, which begins in February, follows yesterday's announcement by British Airways to scrap its three routes from BIA.
The new Gatwick service will co-exist alongside easyJet's five other destinations from Belfast.
BIA's managing director, Albert Harrison, said the expansion would bring tremendous growth to the airport over the next few years and that it would bring more competition on the London route – especially for Flybe, which considers Belfast City to Gatwick as one of its key services.
The decision is also good news considering yesterday's decision by BA to pull out of Belfast International.
Belfast's route's to Aberdeen, Cardiff and Isle of Man are among 21 services throughout the UK to be withdrawn.
BA said the decision was made to achieve greater efficiency and that it may lead to job losses.
