Two detained over knife attack

Detectives investigating a knife attack in west Belfast have detained two men.

The suspects, aged 35 and 41, were arrested last night in Belfast city and are currently helping police with their enquiries.

Two men dragged Ciaran McAreavey from his girlfriend's home in Turf Lodge on 23 March. He was then repeatedly slashed with knives.

The victim received almost 200 stitches and needed a blood transfusion after the incident.

Mr McAreavey told reporters that he thought the attackers intended to kill him.

"I was just lying in my bed and two guys came in with a knife and started carving me up in the bedroom. They trailed me from my heels out into the street and said they were going to make an example of me. They stood above me and started carving me."
