Irish Prime Minister to address Westminster
Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern has been invited to address the joint Houses of Parliament at Westminster on May 15.
It is understood that it is the first time an Irish leader fulfilled such an engagement before Members of the Commons and House of Lords.
The Taoiseach is expected to reflect on the Northern Ireland peace process as well as the changing relationship between Ireland and the UK. The new power-sharing executive, led by Sinn Fein and the DUP will take office on 8 May.
Both the Prime Minster and Mr Ahern are expected to be guests at Stormont to witness the event.
A spokesman for the Irish government confirmed the event and added that the Taoiseach’s office is awaiting formal invitation from London.
