Printing jobs boost for Newry

Independent News and Media newspaper group has announced it is creating 60 jobs at a new printing press in Newry.

The plant will cost £20 million and more than 30 newspaper titles including the Mirror, the News of the World and the Daily Express are printed by the company.

It was opened by chief executive Sir Anthony O’Reilly and former MP of the area Seamus Mallon.

The Belfast Telegraph, which is owned by the Independent group, will continue to be printed in Belfast, on recently upgraded presses.

Independent News and Media has its main interests in Ireland, as well as offices in the UK, Australia, India, New Zealand and South Africa.

More than 175 newspaper and magazine titles are printed weekly.

Belfast Telegraph print hall damaged by fire
A fire within the main building of the Belfast Telegraph on Royal Avenue in Belfast has put the newspapers printing operation out of action for the first time in 20 years. It is believed that the fire, which occurred on Monday night, was started by a spark from a welders torch that ignited a stack of papers in the press hall.
