Minister confirms need for Village regeneration
Social Development Minister David Hanson MP today confirmed the need for long-term regeneration of the Donegall Road/Village area.
Commenting on concerns expressed by local residents groups recently he said: “My Department has been very active in the Greater Village and Sandy Row areas in the last few years. A range of actions designed to develop and support the local communities has been set in hand. This will be carried forward through our work on Neighbourhood Renewal.
“It is clear, however, that the key to longer term regeneration is tackling the significant housing difficulties in the area. I recognise that, my Department recognises that and the Housing Executive recognises that. The Housing Executive has been working hard with the local communities to identify a way forward.
“Proposals for an Urban Renewal Scheme have been developed and these need serious consideration because of the scale of the scheme and the associated significant costs. I recognise, however, that there are still concerns among the local community about the way ahead and I have asked my officials to meet regularly with representatives of the local community to explore the scope for enhancing the scale of housing redevelopment by maximising, for example, investment from the private sector.
He continued: “We need also to see what opportunities arise from the proposals in the Semple Review on Affordable Housing. Through that process I hope that the consensus will be reached as to the scale and nature of regeneration of the area”.

Crumlin Social Housing Scheme Opened
A new social housing scheme of three and four bedroom houses has been officially opened in Crumlin. The fourteen new homes for families on the social housing waiting list, is owned and managed by Habinteg Housing Association who funded the build, with support from the Department for Social Development.

A substantial Co Antrim housing scheme has been launched this week proving much needed good news for the beleaguered construction sector. Stormont Social Development (DSD) Minister Nelson McCausland has officially started the new £18.5m family housing development in Lisburn.

Brewery To Become New Homes
A new £25m housing scheme has been approved for the old Bass Brewery in west Belfast. Some 166 new homes will be built in what is being billed as one of the largest social housing schemes undertaken in Northern Ireland. It will also create much needed employment - with some 200 on-site jobs boosting the beleaguered construction industry.

Minister Praises North Belfast Housing Project
Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie MLA has officially handed over keys to the first residents of a £7.3million housing development on Belfast’s Antrim Road today. Built on the site of the former Milk Marketing Board headquarters, the project was led by Oaklee Housing Association and funded by the Department for Social Development.

Attwood Opens New North Belfast Homes
The Stormont Social Development Minister, Alex Attwood has launched new family homes at Cedar Avenue in North Belfast. The former crèche, with the addition of new building to the rear, has been transformed into five modern apartments by Ulidia Housing Association, with grant assistance from the Department for Social Development.
