Renewable energy grants hit £1m mark
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Enterprises (DETI) has processed £1 million worth of grant claims through its renewable energy initiative – Reconnect.
The Reconnect scheme offers grant of up to £15,000 to private homeowners seeking to install domestic renewable energy systems, ranging from solar panels, wood fuelled boilers to ground source heat pumps.
Already over 1,700 people from across Northern Ireland have been offered such grant assistance.
Davina Quigley, Energy Division, DETI said: “Today’s £1 million milestone is testimony to the fact that the people here recognise the benefits of reconnecting to renewable energy, including combating the threat to the environment from fossil fuels. Since last October, the number of applications to have a technology installed, has trebled.
“Northern Ireland currently generates around 95% of its electricity through the burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and gas. All of us really need to continue to take renewable energy seriously to help in the fight against climate change.”
Mark Doyle from Craigavon, pushed the grant claims to over £1 million, when he installed a wood chip boiler.
He said: “My family and I are aware of the damage fossil fuels are doing to the environment and so when I read in the paper about the grants available, I contacted Reconnect for more informantion.
“The application forms were simple and I had no problems getting approval for 50% assistance towards my wood fuelled boiler.”
Reconnect is delivered through local organisation, Action Renewables. Fiona Gallagher of Action Renewables believes everyone should consider installing a renewable energy system into their home.
