St Andrews talks cost over £392,000

The overall costs of three days of intensive talks between the two governments and Northern Ireland’s political parties last October at St Andrew’s cost £391,783, according to the Northern Ireland Office.

The money was spent during the critical three-day all-party political talks session that took place in St Andrews, Scotland for the restoration of power-sharing.

Secretary of State Peter Hain, said: “ The progress made at St Andrews was the catalyst which brought us to the truly historic events this week.

“The pictures of Ian Paisley and Gerry Adams sitting together will resonate around the world and these two leaders have demonstrated a shared future for Northern Ireland.

“This is where we’ve always wanted to be since 1998 and now we have achieved the truly historic goal of an agreement between and owned by Northern Ireland’s political parties.”

On Monday DUP leader Ian Paisley and Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams secured an agreement for a new power-sharing government at Stormont on May 8.
