New scheme will support victims of hate crime

A new scheme is set to help provide victims of hate crime with home and personal security measures.

The government pilot scheme Hate Incidents Practical Actions (HIPA) project, launched by Criminal Justice Minister David Hanson, will be available 24 hours a day to provide support and reassurance to victims.

“Hate in all its forms is wrong. Attacking or verbally abusing someone because of their sexuality, race, political opinion, religion or disability is not acceptable,” Mr Hanson said.

“The government is fully committed to addressing the problem and is working in partnership with a range of organisations to combat hate crime in all its manifestations.”

Mr Hanson continued: “This scheme will provide support 24 hours a day because it is important that victims can access practical help so they can live free from fear and prejudice.”

The project is being supported by the PSNI and the Housing Executive.
