Two killed in road traffic collision

A man and woman have been killed following a road traffic collision near Portrush in County Antrim.

It is understood they were travelling in the same car when the car crashed on the Ballybogy Road between Ballymoney and Portrush at around 2.15am last night.

The man who died was Polish, and the woman was from Ballymena.

Three other people who were also in the red Volkswagen are currently being treated in hospital. Two of the injured are said to be seriously ill, while the other is in a critical condition.

The driver of the other vehicle involved has been taken to hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Portrush UUP representative Norman Hillis has called for a full scale assessment of the road between Portrush and Ballybogy, by the Roads Service.

Mr Hillis said: "I am apalled that we have now seen seven lives lost on this road in a period of just nine months.

"Only recently I raised the issue again with the PSNI Divisional Commander at a meeting of the District Policing partnership. The situation is critical. How many more people have to die on this stretch of road before we find a solution?"

He has appealed for the implementation of traffic calming measure to reduce the number of fatalities.

He added: "I would extend my deepest sympathy to their families of those involved in this latest, dreadful accident."

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact them.
