Minister opens new renal dialysis unit at Ulster Hospital
Health Minister Paul Goggins today officially opened the new £7 million Renal Dialysis Unit at the Ulster Hospital.
The new renal unit will enable the Ulster Community and Hospital Trust to increase the number of dialysis stations from 12 to 24 by the end of March 2007 and will help meet the increased demand for renal dialysis across the Eastern Board area.
The Minister said: “This investment represents a landmark development in the treatment of renal disease and provides patients with access to modern, top quality services in a convenient, state of the art facility.
“This is excellent news for local patients. The new renal unit will provide a top class service, ensuring that we continue to put patients first in our health service. Patients’ access will be improved.
He continued: "Many more patients requiring dialysis will be able to access services more easily, avoiding the need for them to travel three times a week to Belfast for treatment.
“I have been very impressed with the high standard of the facilities available to the patients here. I am sure that with the enthusiasm, dedication and expertise that was so evident today, this new renal unit will make a very significant and much valued contribution to the renal service in Northern Ireland.”
