NI Assembly election polling steady
Polling across Northern Ireland has got off to a steady start as voters elect 108 members to the new Stormont Assembly.
Polling stations have been open from 7.00am today and will close at 10pm this evening, and nearly 250 candidates will be standing across the 18 constituencies.
The government hopes the elections will pave the way for a return to devolution. A power-sharing executive is due to be formed by 26 March.
More than 19,000 postal votes have been issued. This figure is down by 30% of the combined general and council elections in 2005 and a 3% drop on the 2003 Assembly poll.
Voters must bring a driving licence, passport, Senior SmartPass or electoral identity card as an acceptable form of identification for the proportional representation election.
The first results of the election are expected on Thursday afternoon.
