Man Utd legend emerges as favourite for Republic job
Former Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has emerged as the favourite to take over as manager of the Republic of Ireland football team.
Mr Robson, who has been out of the game since being sacked as manager of Middlesborough, is one of six candidates set to meet former Northern Ireland manager, Bryan Hamilton, over the next couple of weeks to decide who takes over following the departure of Mick McCarthy.
Hamilton has been appointed by FAI chiefs to come up with a successor for McCarthy who resigned in November.
Many believe Robson to be the man to bring Roy Keane in from the international wilderness having, himself, captained Manchester United and renowned for his no-nonsense style of play.
Roy Keane withdrew from international duty shortly before the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea after a bust-up with manager Mick McCarthy.
Former youth team boss Brian Kerr is believed to have already been interviewed by Hamilton for the vacant post.
Kerr is currently the FAI's Technical Director and has taken Irish youth teams to eight major finals since the late 1990's.
Other candidates tipped to succeed McCarthy include: Kenny Dalglish; Kevin Moran; Joe Kinnear; John Aldridge; and Philippe Troussier, who led Japan to the World Cup quarter-finals last year.
FAI chiefs hope to have a new man in place by the time they face Scotland in a friendly on February 12.
