Eight remanded in custody over terrorism charges
Eight men have been remanded in custody until February 17 after appearing at Belfast Magistrates Court today to face charges related to terrorist activity.
The eight men were arrested on Saturday in Monkstown, Newtownabbey, during a police raid on a derelict building in the predominantly loyalist estate. Three weapons – which are being examined by ballistics experts – and paramilitary regalia connected to the UVF were also seized.
A ninth person who was arrested at the time has since been released without charge.
All eight face one charge of membership of a proscribed organisation and one charge relating to firearms offences. When they were charged on Sunday night, they all either denied the charges or made no reply.
Following the arrests on Saturday, the acting Assistant Chief Constable for Belfast Maggie Hunter said: "In recent months we have been directing a huge number of resources against the activities of the UDA. Today’s operation demonstrates that we don’t ignore the activities of other organisations and we will continue to work against and strike at those organisations from whatever quarter."
Though it has been reported in a Sunday newspaper that the UVF had been planning a show of strength for the media, police sources indicated that the intentions of the group were unclear.
The Progressive Unionist Party – which is linked to the UVF – announced their intention to withdraw from negotiations with republican representatives last Friday morning.

Man remanded over hijacking spree
A 23-year-old man has appeared at Armagh Magistrates Court charged in connection with a cross border hijacking spree last month. John Paul Collins, of Salisbury Avenue in Slough, was charged with 16 offences including robbery, hijacking, theft, making threats to kill and assaulting police.

A 39-year-old lorry driver from the Republic has appeared in court this morning to face charges relating to the death of woman in a road collision last weekend. Mary McMullan, 36, of Whitehall View, Ballycastle, was a front-seat passenger in a Honda car that collided with a lorry on the Drones Road, near Ballymoney in Co Antrim, at around 8.
