Strike threat on company merger

The approval of a merger of the two main newspaper distribution companies looks set to spark a strike.

According to the TGWU, a ballot is to be held on industrial action following a breakdown of talks between workers and management at Eason's and John Menzies who will be affected by the merger.

The union is unhappy that workers have been told that they will have to reapply for their jobs following the proposed merger.

The union have accused the companies of ignoring workers' rights under the relevant legislation on company mergers.
