Transfer test alternatives put forward
A group representing grammar school lobby groups is today launching a document putting forward alternative ideas to replace the 11-plus exam.
The Association for Quality Education, is suggesting six options to replace the exam, stating that the alternative should be suitable and fair for all children.
The alternatives consist of other classroom examinations, or computer based tests.
Commenting on the document, Sir Kenneth Bloomfield, Chairman of the association said that the people of Northern Ireland have spoken on the issue of the transfer test and as a whole, it is not a popular system.
He added that the association does feel that an academic selection process is necessary, however are trying to come up with a system which suits everyone.
He said: "What we're trying to do today is to put into the debate a number of alternate suggestions.
"We not looking at a single solution at the moment because frankly we want a solution around which some consensus can be built. A political consensus and a education consensus."
He continued: "What we're looking for is a system which can objectively test were a pupil has got to in terms of literacy and numeracy.
"Those are the key things and above all what we want to achieve is the ideal fit between the child and the school."
The last 11-plus transfer examination is due to be held in 2008.

SEAG Re-Open Transfer Test System For Late Registration
The Schools' Entrance Assessment Group (SEAG) has announced that the transfer test system has been re-opened for parents who missed the Pupil Registration deadline. The Registration Portal has been reopened today, 29 September, and will remain open until 5pm on Monday, 02 October.

DVA Re-Opens Practical Driving Test Booking System
The DVA has re-opened its practical driving test booking system with more capacity. A priority booking system has been in place since 26 April 2021. Those customers affected by the restrictions and who had their appointments cancelled were given first access to the booking system.
