NI gas prices could drop

Northern Ireland home-owners could see a drop in gas costs following an announcement by Phoenix Gas that they are to lower prices in Britain.

It is understood that costs could be lowered by around 17% from next month.

A spokesman for Phoenix Gas, said: "We are confident that we will be able to deliver a price reduction to our customers sooner rather than later as this winter has seen a fall in the wholesale cost, which is now being reflected in forward costs for the next year."

However, Northern Ireland Electricity has indicated that it will not be cutting electricity costs to coincide with the gas drop.

A formal announcement on electricity prices is expected to be made at the end of next week, however they are not likely to change from their current tariffs.

A spokesperson for NIE today said that although gas prices are falling, NIE has recently been hit by a £40 million bill for the upgrading of Kilroot power station in an attempt to reduce emissions to meet new EU standards. He added that "one cancels out the other."

This will mean that NIE will move higher in the league table of UK electricity prices, however they have said that they still predict that it will remain lower than British gas costs.
