Continental Market a 'success'
Belfast City Council has today revealed that over half a million people visited the Continental Market in the run up to Christmas.
Over £10 million in business was generated by market traders and as a result of the influx of visitors to the market, approximately £5 million worth of business was brought to other city centre outlets.
The council today revealed that approximately 60% of visitors came from outside of Belfast - a quarter of whom travelled to the city mainly to visit the market.
Due to the success of this years trade, the Continental Market will return to the city for three days at the end of May, as well returning as part of the Maritime Festival with the tall ships race at the end of June for five days, and again for another month before Christmas 2007.
A spokesman for the city council's markets development department today said that they are delighted with the success of the market and welcomed the economic benefits it brought to Belfast.
He concluded by saying that the council feels privileged to have attracted such a variety of international stall owners who bring a taste of their country and culture to Northern Ireland.
