Latest road fatality on Ulster’s roads named
Ulster’s roads have claimed two more victims overnight, bringing 2003's death toll to 15 in the first twenty-two days of the year.
In County Antrim a man died in a crash near Glarryford Cross on the Crankhill Road dual carriageway, outside Ballymena in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
He has been named as 24-year-old Paul McKendry from Murob Park in Ballymena.
Due to the 24-hour fire strike which ended at 9am this morning, a Yellow Goddesses manned by the army and local firefighters left their picket lines to help.
Another man, Tom McClurg, 46, from Bangor died from injuries he sustained from a crash in Downpatrick in December.
Almost 2,000 firefighters in Northern Ireland walked out of their fire stations yesterday in the latest 24-hour stoppage as part of their ongoing pay dispute.
According to police figures, the army received 68 emergency 999 calls, 14 hoaxes, 35 genuine calls and deployed 19 Yellow Goddesses during the strike period.
While talks are expected to resume between the Fire Brigades Union and the conciliation service Acas later this week, plans to strike again, this time for 48 hours next Tuesday January 28 and again on Saturday February 1, still remain in place.
