ARA seize assets of convicted criminal
The Assets Recovery Agency has today seized the home of a convicted robber following a hearing at Belfast High Court.
During today's hearing, the ARA said that Seamus Cunningham – who is currently serving a six-year prison term in Magilligan Prison in County Londonderry for robbing a security van in 2003, did not have the income to support his lifestyle, and were subsequently granted permission to seize his assets.
The ARA proceeded under the Proceeds of Crime Act by seizing Mr Cunningham's £180,000 estate – including his home in Dundrod, County Antrim, his car - a Rover 25 Turbo Diesel car, two TAG Heuer watches and a sum money in a number of bank accounts.
The ARA also alleged that Mr Cunningham may have been involved in mortgage and credit card fraud.
Alan McQuillan, Assistant Director of the ARA, said that the agency is continuing to attack the assets of organised criminals at all levels of criminality.
Mr McQuillan added: "The High Court has now agreed to freeze these properties and we will continue the investigation with a view to asking the court to eventually declare that all these assets are recoverable."

Over £1.5 million worth of assets belonging to a murdered loyalist have been frozen by the Assets Recovery Agency (ARA), Security Minister Jane Kennedy announced today. A receiver has been appointed to take control of, and manage the assets of, dead loyalist Jim Johnston, who was shot dead at his Co Down home in May.

Property worth £8.2 million has been frozen by the Assets Recovery Agency (ARA) in the biggest case of its kind in Northern Ireland. Around 11 bank accounts, 36 houses and several plots of land were seized after Belfast’s High Court was granted an interim receiving order on the assets of Joseph and Francis McGleenan.

The Assets Recovery Agency's performance has been strongly defended following criticism from the Public Accounts Committee. It's report criticised the agency for focusing on recovering assets by court action, rather than negotiating settlements.

A serial criminal who was jailed over an armed raid on a G4 Securicor van in Antrim is to be hit in his wallet too. Seamus Cunningham, 36, will forfeit a substantial interest in a domestic property at Dundrod, Co Antrim, and seven bank accounts.
