Judge rules against changing city's name

A High Court Judge has today ruled that Northern Ireland's second largest city is to remain 'Londonderry'.

Mr Justice Weatherup made the decision during a judicial review which was prompted by Derry City Council who wanted to officially shorten the city's name.

But the Judge ruled that just because the council had decide to changed its title, it did not mean that the city's name set in the 17th century could be changed.

He added that the name of the city could only be changed through legislation or through Royal decree.

However, Sinn Fein councillor Kevin Campbell said they would continue the fight to get the city's name changed, claiming that everybody would benefit at the end of the day.

However DUP councillor Gregory Campbell said that today's court ruling should put the issue “to rest”.
