Police shoot dangerous dog

Police in south Belfast have shot and killed a dog after receiving reports of it attacking a family pet.

The incident happened at around 6.30pm yesterday, when a member of the public alerted police to an incident in which a pit-bull type animal, was attacking a family pet and had earlier tried to attack a number of children in the Vernon Street area of the city.

A number of shots were discharged and the animal died at the scene.

Amnesties on dangerous dogs have been introduced in some areas of Northern Ireland, where owners of illegal or dangerous dogs can be handed over to authorities without fear of the owners being prosecuted.
