PUP to elect new leader
The Progressive Unionist Party has today announced that it is to choose a new leader to front the party.
The PUP executive is due to meet on Monday to decide who will replace former leader David Ervine, 53, who died last Monday after suffering a heart attack, a stroke and a brain haemorrhage.
A frontrunner to take over from the east Belfast MLA is Policing Board member Dawn Purvis – who the members of the PUP chose during a meeting last night to defend Mr Ervine's seat at the next Stormont election.
Also during last night's meeting, John Kyle was chosen to replace Mr Ervine on Belfast city council, however it is expected that Dr Kyle will be co-opted onto the council instead of an election taking place.
Mr Ervine's replacement in the Northern Ireland Assembly is expected to be announced soon by the Electoral Office.
Billy Hutchinson is expected to fill the position, however, whoever is chosen, will only serve as an MLA until January 30 when the Secretary of State, Peter Hain dissolves the Assembly as part of the St Andrew's Agreement and ahead of the March election.
