Filling Station fined under 'Clean Air Act'

A Holywood filling station has today been fined a total of £2,000 and ordered to pay compensation of £3,500 to a motorist at Bangor Magistrates' Court for offences under the Clean Air Act.

In a case brought by the Trading Standards Service of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Gavin Joseph Vallely, trading as Craigantlet Filling/Service Station at 82 Ballymiscaw Road, Holywood, was found guilty of two charges under the Act.

This is the first case of its kind in Northern Ireland.

The complaint was made on October 20 2005 by a member of the public concerning the quality of diesel fuel he had purchased at the station.

Following this, a Trading Standards Officer visited the premises of Craigantlet Filling Station and also purchased a sample of fuel.

When tested the fuels were found to have a sulphur content of some 654 and 754 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) respectively. The maximum figure permitted under the British Standard for ultra low sulphur diesel fuel and environmental regulations relating to diesel fuel is only 50mg/kg.

Only ultra low sulphur diesel is specified by many vehicle manufacturers as suitable for use in their vehicles and in environmental terms the use of low sulphur diesel leads to reduced vehicle emissions and better air quality.
