PUP leaders funeral takes place

The funeral of Progressive Unionist Party leader David Ervine has taken place in east Belfast.

Both Nationalist and Unionist politicians attended the funeral, among them were Secretary of State Peter Hain, SDLP leader Mark Durkan, Ulster Unionist leader Sir Reg Empey, Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams, DUP MP Peter Robinson, Lord David Trimble, and former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds.

Hundreds of mourners also lined the streets of east Belfast as the funeral took place at the Methodist Mission on the Newtownards Road.

Mr Ervine, 53, replaced Belfast councillor Hugh Smith as PUP leader in 2002, after having helped broker the loyalist ceasefire in 1994.

He died on Monday, after suffering a heart attack, a stroke and a brain haemorrhage.

He was laid to rest this afternoon at a private ceremony at Roselawn Cemetery.
