Pigs cleared of foot-and-mouth disease

The Department of Agriculture has today revealed that the samples taken from a number of pigs at an abattoir in County Antrim yesterday, are clear of foot-and-mouth disease.

A number of pigs were detected with foot lesions after being taken to a slaughterhouse yesterday, and samples were immediately sent to the Institute for Animal Health for testing.

Chief Veterinary Officer Bert Houston had imposed movement restrictions and other conditions at the abattoir and the premises from which the pigs came.

In a statement, Mr Houston said: "This morning, as part of routine surveillance at an abattoir in County Antrim, foot lesions were detected in a number of pigs presented for slaughter.

"As a precautionary measure samples have been taken and are being sent to the Institute for Animal Health in England for testing for foot-and-mouth disease and swine vesicular disease."

The results of the tests are expected later today.

In 2001, over 50,000 animals were culled during an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Northern Ireland.

Almost £8 million was paid out to local farmers as compensation for loss to their economy.
