Attempted armed robbery in County Tyrone

Police in County Tyrone have appealed for witnesses after an attempted armed robbery at a house at Tullaghbeg Road in Cookstown last night.

At 7.45pm the householder went to the front door of his home and saw a man, described as being around 5'8” tall, of stout build and wearing a dark balaclava, denim jacket, polo neck sweater and trainers, outside.

As the householder opened the door, the man pushed him back into the hallway, before a second man appeared. He is described as wearing a balaclava down over his face with only his eyes and mouth showing and was carrying what appeared to be a rifle.

The householder grappled with the first man, and the second man struck him on the arms and face several times with the weapon.

A third man, wearing a balaclava and gloves and carrying a black pistol, then appeared in the doorway. The householder managed to force the men out of the house and then ran down the road in the direction of Coalisland. He heard the sound of a car speeding off in the direction of the Coalisland a short time later.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity, or who saw the men, who all spoke with local accents, in the area.
