PSNI advise vigilance with unknown callers
Police have urged older and more vulnerable people within the community to be vigilant and wary of possible rogue traders and bogus callers.
A police spokesperson said that there have been a number of reports of "cold callers" in areas including Lisburn, Newry and South Belfast offering gardening work, tarmac services and products for sale.
"There have also been reports of people offering services such as dental rebates and callers purporting to be from utility services. Whilst callers may well be genuine Police advise that any such caller should be treated with caution until the householder is satisfied with their details and that their activities are legitimate. If in doubt at all - please call the police immediately," she said.
Police issued the following advice if someone calls at your door:
Police would urge anyone who has any concerns or suspicions about callers or unknown workmen visiting the area to contact them on 0845 600 8000 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. And of course in an emergency call 999.

- Keep front and back doors locked;
- Fit a door bar/chain and use it;
- Only deal with callers by appointment;
- Always ask for an identity card and check it carefully;
- Always use reputable tradesmen;
- Never do business with cold callers;
- Don't sign on the spot if a contract is produced - take time to think about the transaction, a reputable trader will understand;
- Do not keep large amounts of money in your house;
- Never agree to go to your bank/building society/post office to withdraw money;
- If a doorstep seller / trader refuses to leave your premises, close the door and call 999;
- If in doubt, "keep them out."

Police Warn Public Over Cold Callers
There has been a number of reports of 'distraction burglaries' in Belfast, according to the police. Cold callers are believed to be walking into homes of vulnerable people in the area with the intent to steal items. Police are reminding the public to be vigilant over unexpected callers.

Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

As the evenings stretch out, a senior PSNI officer is urging householders to make sure they do all they can to protect their property. Chief Superintendent Simon Walls wants home and business owners to take the necessary precautions to secure their home and belongings against opportunistic burglars and to be on their guard for cold callers.
