Mount Gilbert Community College to close
Mount Gilbert Community College on Belfast's Ballygomartin Road is to close at the end of August 2007.
The decision was taken by Education Minister Maria Eagle, following a proposal by Belfast Education and Library Board.
The Minister said: "The decision to close a school is never easy, but it is clear that the position of Mount Gilbert Community College is no longer sustainable and I must consider the educational needs of the 70 pupils currently enrolled. Those needs cannot be met in a school in serious decline."
The Minister said that the Belfast Education and Library Board will ensure that the pupils remaining in the school at the end of the academic year will be placed in alternative schools where they can continue their education and enjoy the breadth of opportunity and choice they deserve.
Mount Gilbert Community College is a controlled post primary school, in the Greater Shankill area and is the only post primary school in the Shankill area.
In June this year, the Belfast Education and Library Board called for Mount Gilbert Community College to be closed due to falling enrolement.
