Police seize £3m worth of ecstasy tablets

Police last night seized ecstasy tablets with a street value of £3 million in Northern Ireland's biggest ever drugs seizure.

Around 300,000 pills and a quantity of cannabis resin were found by PSNI Drugs Squad officers during a search at Belfast Port in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Independent Councillor for Lisburn, and member of drugs rehabilitation group ASCERT, Gary McMichael, said: "This is significant as it is the largest seizure that there has been in Northern Ireland history. But that's only one part of the effort that needs to take place to try and deal with substance misuse.

"No matter how significant seizures may be, demand is still there and so there appears to be a fairly continuous level of supply."

Ecstasy tablets are widely available, he added, and are relatively inexpensive as Northern Ireland becomes awash with illegal substances. Therefore, whilst the seizure was welcome, the root problems associated with demand needed to be addressed, according to the former UDP leader.

A 27-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged with possession and possession with intent to supply class A and B drugs.
