Governments to share sex offender details
The Irish and British governments are to sign an agreement at Hillsborough later today which will introduce new measures for sharing information on sex offenders both north and south of the border.
The agreement, which will be signed by Irish Foreign Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell, will allow Gardaí to track sex offenders coming to the Republic from the north and Britain.
The move comes after convicted paedophile Paul Hunter Redpath, 35, broke the conditions of his probation by moving from Northern Ireland to the Republic.
Redpath is currently able to remain free in the south as Gardaí currently have no power to arrest him.
NIO Minister David Hanson said that the introduction of the new measures would now deal with such cases.
