Voluntary and community groups 'vital' to criminal justice system

Criminal Justice Minister, David Hanson, has today praised the work of voluntary and community groups in the vital support they provide to the criminal justice system.

The Minister was speaking as he welcomed a first report by Criminal Justice Inspection on the input made by the voluntary and community sector in Northern Ireland to the criminal justice system.

David Hanson said: “The success of the criminal justice system very much depends on a partnership approach between the government agencies and the voluntary and community sector.

“The work and contribution of voluntary and community groups is vital in tackling fear of crime and helping to prevent re-offending. This work is also particularly important in providing support for victims of crime.”

The Minister continued: “The government is committed to this approach and earlier this year the Secretary of State announced an additional £14.6 million to help support voluntary and community groups in their work with disadvantaged children which allowed for current projects to be extended for a further two years.

“I very much welcome this report by the Criminal Justice Inspector and will carefully consider the recommendations it makes to ensure that the good work continues.”
