Government expands new transport scheme for elderly and disabled

A new transport service for people who cannot use conventional bus services was officially launched today in County Down.

At the official launch in the Canal Court Hotel in Newry, Gerry McGinn, Department for Regional Development Permanent Secretary, said: “I am delighted to officially launch this newly expanded Door-to-Door service through the Transport Programme for People with Disabilities (TPPD) to 27 urban areas throughout Northern Ireland.

“The service marks a further step in delivering real improvements to the lives of those people who find it difficult or impossible to use mainstream public transport. The service will fulfil a function similar to regular bus town services by enabling people to get to and from their homes to access local facilities and services.

“I would encourage everyone who meets the criteria for the scheme to become a member and use the transport to add real value to their lives.”

Mr McGinn continued by congratulating Chambers Coach Hire on being awarded the contract to deliver the service. He said: “I have been encouraged with the enthusiasm and commitment they have already shown. They are well aware of the importance of this scheme and they will continue to work with my officials to ensure the success of this initiative.”

The new services will start in Northern Ireland as follows:
  • September 29 2006 – Dungannon
  • October 20 2006 – Cookstown
  • November 10 2006 – Newry
  • December 8 2006 - Newtownards (including Comber & Dundonald)
  • January 26 2007 - Armagh
  • February 23 2007 - Newtownabbey (including Carrickfergus) and Strabane
  • March 30 2007 - Banbridge and Omagh
  • April 27 2007 - Ballymena, Coleraine (including Ballymoney) and Enniskillen
  • May 25 2007 - Antrim, Limavady and Lisburn (including Dunmurry)
  • June 29 2007 - Bangor (including Holywood), Craigavon (including Lurgan & Portadown), Downpatrick and Larne
The Department decided to extend door-to-door transport across Northern Ireland’s urban areas, following an independent review of the Transport Programme for People with Disabilities (TPPD) in 2002.

The Transport Programme for People with Disabilities (TPPD) is administered by the DRD and currently provides funding for door-to-door transport services in Belfast and Londonderry (operated by Disability Action and Bridge Accessible Transport respectively).

The TPPD also funds Translink’s Easibus services in Belfast, Bangor and Londonderry, and provides support for a number of Shopmobility schemes.
